Why is Holi Celebrated?

Holi is a festival that is celebrated in India around March. It is celebrated as a means to commemorate the victory of good over Evil. It honours the day on which the demoness Holika was killed. Holika was Hiranyakashipu, the demon king’s sister. Hiranyakashipu thought of himself to be a God and wanted people to worship him because of power. His son, Prahlada, refused to do so and was instead a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. As this was something that Hiranyakashipu did not appreciate, he asked his sister, who was supposed to survive all fires, to sit with his son, her nephew, on a fire. Due to his devotion, Prahlada was saved, and the very fire lit to kill Holika’s nephew ended up killing her. This very devotion also later led Lord Vishnu, through his Avatar of Narsimha, to save Prahalad from his father and kill Hiranyakashipu despite having a boon.

Why is Holi played with Colours?

The festival of Holi came to be associated with colours later when Lord Krishna, another Avatar of Lord Vishnu, started celebrating this festival with colours. He played it in this manner with his group of friends at Vrindavan and Gokul. To this date, people visit Vrindavan during Holi as the celebrations of the festival here are unparalleled. For a significant part, Holi was celebrated primarily with only Gulaal, a pink-coloured powder. However, in recent times, many colours have appeared, giving many more options to people celebrating Holi.
